Sometimes, when people ask us what we are growing, it seems that people even massively underestimate what we are growing, or think that we are self-sufficient. However, we have been feeding us quite a bit from our home-grown vegetables, and also: we are still using last year's, frozen fruit!

2014 Jerusalem artichoke (topinambur) harvest
The Jerusalem artichoke (topinambur) season is now over. We have, however, been using it - mainly - to cook soups for the last couple of months, and one needs to accept that when the new shoots start coming up ('babies from last year's parent plants') that it's time to clear the raised bed - we removed about 15 tubers, which will soon be part of someone else's garden, and about 10-20 mini plants which weren't worth it to be passed on. Above, you can see just one of maybe 8-10 harvest times (each gave us about 600-800g of plants).

Some of the 2013-14 chard harvest
The chard (mangold) harvest has been ongoing, probably since November last year, but I found that we have had a bit too much of it to eat, actually. So we are still harvesting the last plants now. We often used it in stir-fries, or pasta sauces. We are not the only ones who like them. Pigeons and slugs seem to be keen on them too. We grew them in two different veg patches. However, the 4-5 plants on each bed have produced enough leaves for a 2-person household.

Netting used to protect Purple Sprouting Broccoli from pigeons
Last but not least: purple sprouting broccoli (PSB). The photo gives you an idea what kind of netting we use to keep the pigeons off the plants. This has worked very well. We actually had a couple too many, but can one ever have to much PSB? :-) Two further plants we grew, and not documented here: rocket and other salads (we put some of them in the green house in the last 10 months and that was a great protection against slugs!), and the Head Gardener has now started to eat some of her asparagus! She is very pleased with the taste. :-)
