The proof is in the number of filled punnets...

In the previous post on constructing our fruit cage I had mentioned the glut of berries from our fruit cage, and the photo of this post shows some of the berries we harvested. The gherkins in the photo were grown in the greenhouse and we had a substantial amount of them, from only 2 plants. The Head Gardner has also experimented with some pickling, and so far only 1 jar didn't turn out well (I hope that the ants will like them on our compost heaps.) As already mentioned in the previous post: we had to spend 1-2 hours each evening on harvesting and watering activities. Therefore, we will reduce the number of gooseberry and red currant bushes - our freezer was bursting with them. The problem is: if you have too much of one thing at the time, it's just too much to handle. Sadly, one or two people who wanted some were too lazy to come and pick them. Maybe in the coming year, we'll offer the harvesting activity - as "pick your own" - to the Gents of Letchworth, the name I have given to our best friends living very near to us. I will report back on how this idea might have worked next year. CHG
