Just to put you in the right frame of mind... this is the latest addition to what we are trying to do: it's a coldframe. And just to give you an idea of scale, I had asked the Head Gardener to pose next to it. But why, oh why - you might think - do does one need a coldframe? In our old garden we grew plants from seed and when they are already a bit bigger, but not yet big enough, they need to get taken out of the greenhouse during the day, as the greenhouse becomes too hot, and then in the evening need to be moved back to the greenhouse - as in April and May the nights can be too cold for these young plants.
Well, that's where the coldframe comes in: you put these plants into it, andduring the day the plants get sunshine, and as the lid is open they don't get too hot.
In the evening, you can just close the lid, and the are kept warm over night - but you don't need to pick up the plants and carry them into the greenhouse. Genius, eh? Well, at least also another way of making gardeners "part with their money". :-)
