Welcome to A. officinalis!

Welcome to A. officinalis - or just Asparagus!

The fact that I won't like eating it, doesn't mean that I'm not now (and have not not) supported the Head Gardener in planting this vegetable. The HG is telling me that it will take 2-3 years before we will be able to harvest them, and she will be able to eat. I think that's longterm gardening commitment... Oh, in case you want to read up what some US site is saying about how to grow Asparagus: http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1603.html

The photo to the left shows this bed, after we added a bit of top soil to cover (gently!) the roots, and before watering this bed and adding manure... It doesn't look like much work, but the problem is that the plant and its root are quite fragile, and even with a lot of care the HG managed to break the top bit of one plant - and no, it wasn't my fault. Anyway, I dis-gress(er).
The final photo (right) shows the bed as it is now, with manure on top - you can hardly see the white asparagus plants any more.
