We spent a good couple of hours preparing the ground along the fence next to the neighbours, and then put more than 50 (yes, fifty) willow sticks into the ground. Each one about 15-20cms deep... Then the Head Gardener tied them together. Most of the sticks will hopefully develop roots (in the ground, of course), but some of them have just been used as "cross bars" of the fence.
In the coming months we hope to see: a) some growth, and b) some greenery. Willow can grow up to 2 metres per year! The Head Gardener thinks that this will keep me happy, as I like to cut things. If the growth is going to be true, we will intially be able to use the cuttings/cut offs in other spaces of the garden... We shall see. Anyway, for those who don't believe that this is a good idea to grow a hedge which is also a fence structure: please go to http://www.westwaleswillows.co.uk/fedgeplanting.html.
Our fedge is "in response" to our neighbours cutting their huge conifer.
We have actually done quite a bit of gardening in February, and I hope to share with you other photos quite soon; sadly there are also some technical issues - in addition to lack of time, etc.
